Hobbiton tours must be pre-booked directly with Hobbiton (hobbitontours.com). We recommend the first tour of the day. Waitomo cave tickets can also be pre-booked. Allow a full day — this route is best not rushed.
Best season: Year-round, though spring (Oct–Nov) and autumn (Mar–Apr) offer beautiful light for photography at the Shire.

Piha is a surf beach with strong rips — swimming is only safe between the flags. The Mercer Bay Loop trail (40 mins) offers some of the most dramatic coastal scenery on the North Island and is highly recommended for fit walkers.
